Health and wellness coaching with adolescents and young adults (ages 13–25) is a distinct and nuanced specialty. While the core competencies of the NBC-HWC credential form a strong foundation, working with younger populations requires expanded awareness of adolescent development, age-appropriate communication, unique ethical considerations, and the specific health challenges that disproportionately affect teens and young adults.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe key stages of adolescent and young adult development (cognitive, emotional, social, and identity) and explain how each stage informs coaching presence and session structure.
- Apply the NBHWC core competencies of including active listening, motivational interviewing, goal-setting, and strengths-based approaches while using age-appropriate language and techniques adapted for teens and young adults.
- Recognize and appropriately respond to unique ethical and legal considerations when coaching minors, including confidentiality limits, mandated reporting, assent vs. consent, and parental involvement.
- Demonstrate cultural humility and trauma-informed approaches that account for the specific social pressures, identities, and lived experiences of adolescent and young adult populations.
- Identify the most prevalent health challenges for teens and young adults (including mental health, disordered eating, substance use, sleep disruption, and screen overuse) and know when and how to refer.
- Adapt session formats, goal-setting frameworks, and accountability strategies to align with the motivational tactics, developmental readiness, and time constraintsĀ typical of younger clients.
- Utilize digital tools, apps, and social platforms ethically and effectively to support adolescent coaching engagements.
- Recognize signs of crisis, abuse, eating disorders, and suicidal ideation, and demonstrate knowledge of appropriate referral pathways and crisis resources.
Taught by Holly Miller, NBC-HWC with 12 years of classroom experience as a middle and high school health education teacher and many years as a mom to teens and young adults.
