Skill Builder of the Month: Setting Boundaries

Coaching relationships work because they're warm, collaborative, and client-centered. Using the resource below, you can walk away with ready-to-use language for three of the most common boundary moments in coaching: closing a session on time, redirecting scope of practice pressure, and referring a client to clinical support as needed. These skills are what let you show up fully for every client, session after session.

Coaching Asset: 6 Ways to Curb Coach Burnout

  • Cap your caseload: Set a hard ceiling on active clients based on your actual bandwidth, not what you think you should be able to handle — and revisit it seasonally rather than letting it creep up.
  • Build recovery time into the schedule: Block buffer time between sessions and protect at least one full day a week with no client contact, so recovery isn't something you fit in only when you're already depleted or living in survival mode.
  • Find support: Regular check-ins with another coach or a therapist to process hard sessions prevent the emotional weight of the work from accumulating silently.
  • Track your own warning signs: Notice early burnout warning signs  (dreading sessions, irritability with clients, skipping your own health habits, etc) and treat them as data, not a character flaw to push through. From there, create an action plan for how to reset.
  • Separate your business hours from your identity: Set explicit boundaries around when you're reachable, and protect activities outside coaching that have nothing to do with being a coach.
  • Under-promise, over-deliver: This allows you to give more when you have the capacity. For example, you have an awesome article on the exact topic your client is struggling with. The problem? You have no idea where it is. Instead of mentioning it in the session, send it as a happy surprise if/when you are able to find it. If you can't find it , or run out of time, there's no guilt for not following through.

Course Spotlight:

NEW!! Adolescent Health Coaching: (10 NBHWC CECs)

Health and wellness coaching with adolescents and young adults (ages 13–25) is a distinct and nuanced specialty. While the core competencies of the NBC-HWC credential form a strong foundation, working with younger populations requires expanded awareness of adolescent development, age-appropriate communication, unique ethical considerations, and the specific health challenges that disproportionately affect teens and young adults.
