Skill Builder of the Month: Asking Powerful Questions
Powerful questions are at the heart of transformational health and wellness coaching because they shift the focus from advice-giving to insight-generating. Rather than telling clients what to do, skillful questions invite reflection, increase self-awareness, and uncover the deeper motivation driving behavior. They help clients connect their daily habits to their core values, identify hidden barriers, and generate their own sustainable solutions. When a coach asks a truly powerful question (one that is open-ended, thought-provoking, and forward-focused) it activates ownership, autonomy, and intrinsic motivation. In health and wellness work especially, where lasting change depends on mindset as much as strategy, powerful questions create the space for clarity, commitment, and meaningful action.
Here is a list of 10 powerful questions to incorporate into your sessions:
After asking a thought-provoking question, be sure to leave time for "think space". Remember, a coaching session is sometimes the only time in a client's day that is just for them. Filling the space too quickly takes away from their time to process and fully embrace this experience. Allow for silence and hold space for your client to lean in.

Coaching Asset: Assessments in Coaching
Context: When using assessments in health and wellness coaching, coaches should approach them with clear intention and thoughtful care. Assessments can be powerful tools for insight, reflection, and progress tracking, but they must be used strategically to support, not overwhelm, the client. It’s easy to fall into the trap of overloading clients with a mix of personality inventories, health history forms, lifestyle logs, strengths assessments, and values clarification exercises in an effort to gain a complete picture. However, doing too much too soon can create cognitive fatigue, erode motivation, and damage trust.

Building Your Coaching Business : Finding Your Niche
Creating a strong niche in health coaching helps you stand out, attract ideal clients, and charge premium rates. Here are 3 tips to carve out your space:
1. Start with a Specific Problem to Solve
Instead of “I help people get healthy,” narrow it down:
-
Burnout recovery for corporate women
-
Gut health for new moms
-
Flexibility and training for men over 40
The more specific the problem, the easier it is to market and get referrals.
2. Align with Your Story and Experience
Your credibility increases when your niche connects to:
-
Your personal transformation
-
Your professional background
-
A community you understand deeply
For example, if you overcame autoimmune challenges, you could specialize in lifestyle support for autoimmune clients.
3. Define a Clear Outcome
Your niche should include a tangible transformation, such as:
-
“Reduce burnout and create work-life balance”
-
“Reverse prediabetes through lifestyle changes”
-
“Lose 20 pounds sustainably without extreme dieting”
Clear outcomes make marketing easier.
