Skill Builder of the Month: Roll with Resistance
While Motivational Interviewing as a whole is foundational, the ability to roll with resistance (sometimes called "dancing with discord") is one of the most underrated and difficult skills to truly master. It's the art of not pushing back when a client pushes back.
Most coaches intellectually understand they shouldn't argue or persuade, but in the moment, when a client says "I've tried this before and it never works," the instinct to reassure, defend, or problem-solve is powerful.
A skilled coach instead:
- Reflects the ambivalence without judgment ("So part of you wants change, and part of you has real doubts based on experience")
- Amplifies autonomy ("You get to decide if and when this feels right")
- Sidesteps, rather than being confrontational - keeping the conversation moving without triggering defensiveness
What makes it hard to perfect is that it requires coaches to genuinely detach from outcomes. A coach who subtly needs the client to succeed will unconsciously push and the client will feel it. True rolling with resistance requires trusting the process even when a client seems to be moving backward.

Coaching Asset: Wheel of Life Makeover
The Wheel of Life is one of the most recognized tools in a coach's toolkit. It's visual, intuitive, and opens up rich conversation fast. But if you've been using the same eight-domain version since your coach training, it might be time for a refresh.
Here are a few ways to give this classic tool a makeover:
Customize the Domains: The standard domains (career, finances, health, relationships, etc.) are a great starting point, but they don't fit everyone. A client navigating new parenthood might need domains like sleep, identity outside of parenting, or partnership. A client in career transition might swap in creativity, risk tolerance, or sense of purpose. Invite clients to rename or replace domains that don't resonate. This increases autonomy.
Use It as a Progress Marker: Most coaches pull out the Wheel of Life at intake and leave it there. Try revisiting it at the midpoint and end of your coaching engagement. Side-by-side comparisons can be incredibly motivating. Clients often underestimate their own growth until they see it reflected back visually. It also opens the door to great questions: What shifted? What surprised you? Where do you want to focus next?
Adapt It for Your Niche: If you coach within a specific population or focus area, consider building a niche-specific version. A wellness coach might use domains like movement, nutrition, sleep, stress, and joy. A workplace coach might center it around energy, boundaries, growth, and team relationships. A branded, customized wheel can also become a signature piece of your coaching practice. Click here for an example.
A Few Tips for Facilitation
- Let clients share their thoughts without coach interpretation.
- Ask "what would a 10 look like?" before "what's getting in the way?" to anchor the conversation in possibility.
- Resist the urge to head straight for the lowest score. Ask your client where they want to start.

Course Spotlight:
NEW!! Adolescent Health Coaching: (10 NBHWC CECs)
Health and wellness coaching with adolescents and young adults (ages 13–25) is a distinct and nuanced specialty. While the core competencies of the NBC-HWC credential form a strong foundation, working with younger populations requires expanded awareness of adolescent development, age-appropriate communication, unique ethical considerations, and the specific health challenges that disproportionately affect teens and young adults.

Building Your Coaching Business: Visability
You don't need to be everywhere. You need to be somewhere consistently.
If you've ever felt the pressure to post on Instagram, send emails, show up on LinkedIn, record YouTube videos, AND maintain a podcast (all while actually coaching clients) you're not alone. That overwhelm is real.
Here's the truth: your ideal clients don't need to find you in five places. They need to find you in one place, regularly, where you're showing up with something worth paying attention to.
Pick the platform that feels most natural to you. Show up there with genuine value. That one channel becomes a trust-building machine.
Consistency beats omnipresence every single time.
This week's challenge: Audit your current visibility efforts. Are you spreading yourself thin trying to maintain channels that aren't converting? Pick your one and commit to it for 90 days.
